Roulette Guide — How to Play Roulette in Africa
What Is Roulette?
Roulette is a table game where a ball spins around a numbered wheel and players bet on where it will land. It’s the most iconic casino game in the world and the most popular table game across Africa — featured at every land-based casino from Casino de Marrakech to Sun City, and available at all major online operators.
How Roulette Works
The roulette wheel contains numbered pockets from 0 to 36. In European roulette (the most popular variant in Africa), there’s a single zero pocket, giving the house a 2.7% edge. Players place bets on individual numbers, groups of numbers, red or black, odd or even, or high or low ranges. The dealer spins the wheel, drops the ball, and pays out winning bets according to the odds.
Common bet types include straight-up bets (single number, pays 35:1), split bets (two adjacent numbers, pays 17:1), and outside bets like red/black or odd/even (pays 1:1). French roulette adds the “La Partage” rule, returning half of even-money bets when the ball lands on zero.
Why Roulette Is Popular in Africa
Roulette’s popularity in Africa has deep roots. Many of the continent’s casino venues were established during colonial and post-colonial eras, with roulette as the centrepiece attraction. The game is visually dramatic, easy to understand, and offers a wide range of bet sizes — from conservative even-money bets to high-risk single-number plays.
Online, live dealer roulette has accelerated its growth by bringing the real casino atmosphere to mobile players. Evolution’s Lightning Roulette, which adds random multipliers up to 500x, has become particularly popular across African markets.
Roulette Variants Available in Africa
European roulette is the standard across Africa, with French roulette preferred in Francophone countries (Morocco, Tunisia, Senegal, Cameroon). Live dealer roulette from Evolution and Pragmatic Play Live is available at most online operators. Lightning Roulette, Immersive Roulette, and Auto Roulette offer faster-paced variations for online players.
